Manchester United are still looking to bring in another midfielder, even after a solid showing in the summer transfer window.

United may have lost the match against Arsenal, but the scoreline did not tell the full story. Amorim’s side looked better organised and created more chances, coming away from the match feeling hard done by not to getting at least a point.

Matheus Cunha stood out for United, with several moments of quality that had the crowd off their feet. It was an early sign that he could quickly become a fan favourite.

Despite that strong showing, midfield depth remains crucial for continued momentum and top-table competition, and with Carlos Baleba’s deal off the table, the board is now pursuing other targets.

Man United set sights on Sevilla’s Lucien Agoume

United fans have been calling for a midfield addition all summer, and that looks to be the club’s main focus now.

Baleba had been the first choice, and there was even talk of a bid. But with little sign that Brighton are willing to sell, United appear ready to move on, though they might revisit him next year.

According to Sevilla-based outlet Orgullo Biri, United have now turned their attention to French midfielder Lucien Agoume.

Agoume shares many qualities with Baleba, making him a sensible alternative. The Red Devils seem ready to push ahead with this new target.

The 22-year-old’s contract includes a £35m release clause, which could represent good value for the right player. Spanish outlet Ficherio has reported that United might try to negotiate a lower fee, between £22m and £26m.

While Agoume may not generate as much excitement as Baleba did initially, he has the potential to be just as effective in the long run.

Lucien Agoume vs Carlos Baleba: what the numbers say

Lucien Agoume could provide Manchester United with exactly what they are seeking: physicality and athleticism, along with other key traits.

With the news regarding the Frenchman, comparisons between him and Baleba are inevitable. And they are fair too, given how much the two players have in common.

Agoume Statistic per 90 Baleba
2.55 Shot creating actions 2.21
81.8% Pass completion % 87.5%
5.88 Progressive passes 3.96
1.19 Progressive carries 1.42
0.98 Successful take-ons 1.09
2.90 Tackles 2.64
1.83 Interceptions 1.62
1.23 Blocks 1.55
1.96 Clearances 1.48
1.66 Aerials won 1.29

Looking at their numbers from last season, Agoume outperforms Baleba defensively – a key area where United need improvement – and also registers more progressive passes per game.

The price difference is even starker. With Brighton reportedly demanding over £100m for Baleba, Agoume’s £35m release clause represents far better value for money. He could step in immediately as a starter while also serving as a long-term replacement for Casemiro.
