Manchester United may have lost the derby, but one player put in a performance that gives reason to be hopeful about what lies ahead.

The mental side of the game is crucial at Old Trafford. Plenty of skilled players have arrived with high expectations, only to struggle under the spotlight.

That is why the club place so much emphasis on bringing in players who have more than just technical ability. They need people who can handle the unique challenges that come with wearing a United shirt.

In a transfer window filled with movement, there is one signing already showing signs he could make a real impact for United.

There was not much to celebrate from Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to City, but one player did leave a positive impression.

Bryan Mbeumo, one of the new signings thrown into the deep end, did not shy away from the challenge. His persistence and energy stood out even as United struggled.

The Cameroon international was probably United’s most dangerous player on the day. He came close with a well-hit volley and never stopped trying to create chances.

As the game went on, he grew more involved, fuelled by a determination to pull something back for his side.

He managed four of United’s 12 shots and was a constant presence in attack. His willingness to take on City’s defence was clear throughout the match.

Mbeumo looks a bright spot early on

United have now managed just one win in their opening four Premier League matches, alongside a draw and two defeats. Add to that an early Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town.

With pressure building, next weekend’s match against Chelsea at Old Trafford already feels like an important one. Mbeumo has quickly become a player Ruben Amorim can lean on.

The former Brentford forward has found the net twice already and picked up United’s Player of the Month Award for August, quickly endearing himself to supporters.

His performance against City showed real determination. He played with the drive you would expect from someone who chose United over other options this summer.

Mbeumo is emerging as a pivotal player for their early-season aspirations, especially with new signing Benjamin Sesko still settling in and Matheus Cunha out due to injury.
