Manchester United may face disappointment in their pursuit of a Brazil international, following a new development involving one of Matheus Cunha and Casemiro’s national teammates.

Cunha joined Manchester United in June, completing a move that had been in the works for some time. The 26-year-old forward was identified early on as a priority signing for the summer window.

United met his release clause at Wolves, paying £62.5 million to bring him to Old Trafford. That fee reflects both his talent and the club’s need to strengthen their attack ahead of the new season.

This summer, Cunha joined Casemiro on international duty after Carlo Ancelotti included both players in his Brazil squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

Cunha and Casemiro were part of Brazil’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers in June, helping secure the team’s place at next summer’s 2026 tournament.

Man Utd face setback in pursuit of Matheus Cunha and Casemiro’s Brazil teammate Ederson as Atalanta make decision

Ederson has come onto Manchester United’s radar recently, with the club looking to strengthen their midfield options under Ruben Amorim.

The 26-year-old, who plays alongside Matheus Cunha and Casemiro for Brazil, has seen his future at Atalanta come into question this summer.

He joined Atalanta in 2022 from Salernitana and remains under contract until 2027. Despite that, there have been doubts about whether he will stay long term.

Football Italia now reports that the Serie A side are determined to keep Ederson. They plan to offer him a new deal and have no intention of letting him go this summer.

The report adds that Atalanta want Ederson to commit his future to the club, even as United continue to be linked with a move for the defensive midfielder.

Man Utd face competition for Atalanta and Brazil midfielder Ederson

Ederson has played 139 times for Atalanta, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists since joining the club. The midfielder previously had spells with Corinthians and Cruzeiro.

Atalanta have been trying to hold onto Ederson, reportedly setting an asking price of around £63m before they are willing to discuss a potential sale of the Brazil international.

Ruben Amorim doesn’t have many defensive midfield options at Old Trafford, and United are expected to bring in another player in that position before the window closes.

The report claims that Manchester United aren’t the only side interested in Ederson this summer, with Atalanta potentially facing further interest from elsewhere.

The Brazilian has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, where Al Hilal could join the race for his signature.
