There are rumours linking Manchester United with a move for Cole Palmer, and the specifics of his Chelsea deal suggest it is a possibility, though far from straightforward.
Palmer grew up supporting United, so naturally there is some hope among fans that he might end up at Old Trafford one day.
Reports this week have suggested Palmer is unsettled at Chelsea, sparking talk that he could be heading to Old Trafford in 2026.
United are expected to need a long-term replacement for Bruno Fernandes before long, and Palmer fits the profile of what they would likely be looking for.
Palmer is widely seen as one of the top players in the Premier League, so any move would be costly.
If United want to bring Palmer to Old Trafford, they will need to put forward a substantial offer that convinces Chelsea, who hold all the cards in this situation.
That is because Palmer is tied down to a long-term contract. The 23-year-old extended his deal in 2024, keeping him under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033.
This gives Chelsea every reason to hold firm on their valuation unless Palmer himself decides he wants out and pushes for the move.
The club has taken this approach with several players, using lengthy contracts to spread financial commitments across more years.
Palmer currently earns around £130,000 a week, according to Metro. His contract also includes performance-based incentives that could boost his pay further over time.
Since Ineos took over, they have focused on getting the wage structure at Manchester United back in line.
Some of the highest earners have been moved on, and the club has steered clear of handing out massive deals to new arrivals.
Palmer would be a bigger name than anyone else Ineos has brought in so far, so increasing his current £130,000 per week wage should not be an issue for United.
At the moment, Casemiro sits at the top of the wage list with £350,000 a week, followed by Bruno Fernandes on £300,000.
Alongside that pay increase, Palmer’s childhood ties to Manchester United could play a role in pulling him toward Old Trafford if it comes to that down the line.
