Now 30 years old, Fernandes remains vital under Ruben Amorim, who is shaping the team ahead of the new Premier League season.
According to Sport, United are among the clubs keeping an eye on Barcelona and Spain midfielder Fermin Lopez.
The report notes that Lopez is expected to face stiff competition under Barca’s new manager, Hansi Flick, with the club also tightening their finances.
Barcelona have already signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia and are closing in on Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao – two moves that could impact Lopez’s game time.
As a result, club directors are reportedly considering Lopez among the players who could be sold to help balance the books. Notably, he has often been viewed as a long-term successor to Fernandes.
Inside Futbol reported in March that United had been scouting Lopez for some time, after Michael Edwards previously tried to sign him while at Liverpool.
Although speculation cooled towards the end of last season, the Red Devils remain fans of the midfielder.
Lopez made a solid impression for Barcelona last season, scoring nine goals and providing an assist across 42 appearances in all competitions.
If United do move for the Spaniard, he could be an intriguing long-term replacement – or even an understudy – for Fernandes.
If United do move for the Spaniard, who is reportedly seen as a long-term successor to Fernandes, he could be an intriguing option – whether as an immediate squad addition or a future leader in the midfield.
