Manchester United have started their build-up to the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, and one young player caught the eye during training.

After bringing in two attacking midfielders and a forward, it is clear that United are still looking to add some athleticism to their midfield.

Amorim has not shied away from highlighting the need for more balance in his squad, and recent performances have only underlined that point.

With talks ongoing for Carlos Baleba, Amorim appears to be open to internal solutions as well. This week, he called up a highly-rated youth prospect who has drawn early comparisons to Declan Rice.

Ruben Amorim appeared to be preparing for a proper 11 vs 11 tactical session ahead of the Arsenal match, given the size of the training group.

Several young players were involved, including Bendito Mantatao, Ethan Williams, Rhys Bennett, Jaydan Kamason, and Jacob Devaney.

Devaney’s inclusion is notable because he would have taken up the defensive midfielder role during training – a position Amorim has been looking to reinforce.

His blend of press resistance, work rate, and progressive passing has led to comparisons with Declan Rice. He has been called up before but has often gone unnoticed despite showing leadership and maturity in the academy.

Tyler Fredricson made a name for himself last season despite little prior attention, highlighting Amorim’s willingness to trust young players who prove their worth.

If Sekou Kone’s pre-season form is anything to go by and with ongoing difficulties in securing Baleba, Devaney might find an opportunity this season.

Youngsters at Man United looking to break through this season

Not having European football means fewer opportunities for young players to impress, so they must make the most of every chance, from training sessions to rare first-team appearances.

The early weeks of the campaign are often when younger players have their best shot. With squad roles still up for grabs and little form to go on, there’s more room to impress.

Standing out in training can be enough to catch Amorim’s eye, especially if a player fills a gap in the squad that needs attention.

Devaney finds himself in that exact spot. Not every breakthrough follows the same path, and his might come simply by making a strong impression behind closed doors.
