We got off with one yesterday. We need to up our game for both Rotterdam and Leith because we’ll need to be much better in both matches against Feyenoord and Hibs to get anything from these tough challenges…
There’s no getting away from the fact that Celtic got away with one on Saturday night in Paisley, as we got out of jail thanks to a stunning last gasp winner from Callum McGregor. Yes, I understand that the three points is all that really matters at the end of the day but we have to improve drastically, especially with these two much tougher away games on the horizon.
Next up on the itinerary is a trip to Rotterdam to take on Feyenoord in the Europe League, in what’s sure to be a tough fixture, and one we will need to earn something from if we harbour any hopes of automatic qualification to the last 16. At the half way stage in the group stages Celtic has four points from four games and Martin O’Neill has stated that in his view the team will need at least six points from the remaining four games. A third defeat in five matches would give the team a mountain to climb.
Upon our return from the Netherlands we will be thrust straight into domestic action with a trip to Leith to take on Hibs in our next port of call as we aim to keep the pressure on Hearts at the top of the standings. With all due respect to St Mirren, Feyenoord and Hibs will be a much more difficult hurdle to overcome, particularly in the case of the Dutch outfit.
Hibs won’t be an a stroll in the park either, with David Gray’s side in the midst of an impressive run and will fancy their chances in their own patch. So it’s all the more imperative that we up our game considerably for the next two games. If we put in performances like last night , then I’m afraid I don’t hold much hope of getting anything out of either match.
The games are relentless, there are holes in the squad, the injury list is horrendous and we still have an interim management team in situ as we await white smoke over Paradise. Martin O’Neill doesn’t know if he’ll be on the plane to Rotterdam on Wednesday or not and even if he is there will be further uncertainly ahead of the trip to Easter Road.
