Manchester United’s academy has enjoyed a good week after a celebration of youth players signing on at the club’s scholarship night on Friday, who became a part of the Class of 2026.

Their transfer endeavours, however, have been a whole different story at the start of the summer window.

While Brazilian midfielder Ederson’s signing is complete, the Red Devils have failed to capitalise on their fast start.

The club missed out on the signing of Mateus Fernandes, as the Portuguese youngster and 2025/26 Premier League Young Player of the Season nominee elected to move to Tottenham Hotspur, following their failure to land top target Elliot Anderson.

Anderson ended up at rivals Manchester City, who are now closing in on another United target.

According to David Ornstein for The Athletic, Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign Leicester youngster Jeremy Monga. In a deal worth £12.5m in total, City head coach Enzo Maresca led the club’s drive for Monga, having known the player from his time as Leicester head coach in the 2023/24 season.

Jeremy Monga would have been a smart addition to Manchester United’s academy, with a view to give the 16-year-old a pathway into the first team. Arsenal looked to have beaten the Red Devils to the signing in June, reportedly agreeing a £10 million deal with Leicester to sign their exciting winger, but it’s City who have won the race.

While they missed out on this one, Manchester United won’t be too worried. Their academy is one of the world’s best, and keeps producing top players.

With their latest academy night seeing exciting young players like Pharell Silvester signing on the dotted line, United will feel their own product line will be self-sufficient.

Another transfer blow for the Red Devils, but not one they are set to lose any sleep over.
