Manchester City are continuing to keep tabs on German wonderkid Florian Wirtz. But a January move for the Leverkusen midfielder isn’t in the immediate future according to a recent report from Sam Lee for the Athletic.

Wirtz would seem to be the ideal candidate to join the world champions. The treble world champions may be in the market for a long-term Kevin De Bruyne replacement next summer. Ten Belgian international is getting on in age and City may look for someone who can fill his shoes in time. The young prodigy would fit the bill as an elite young player with his best football ahead of him. Given his technical ability, he does appear ready-made to slot into Pep Guardiola’s midfield.

Any future move for the German wonderkid is likely to be an expensive one. Andrew Walker previously reported for Caughtoffside.com that Xabi Alonso’s side would demand a fee of over £105 million for Wirtz. The fee wouldn’t be an issue for Manchester City given their vast wealth.

With Bayer Leverkusen on top of the Bundesliga and seeking their first-ever league title they will be keen to retain their star. Florian Wirtz has been a key piece in Xabi Alonso’s side’s rise to the top of the Bundesliga. He has scored 8 goals and added 12 assists in 23 appearances in all competitions. On top of his goals and assists his all-round play has caught the eye this season.

It would be a frightening prospect for City’s rivals if the young midfielder joined the champions. If he were to join forces with Phil Foden they could form the backbone of the City midfield for years to come.
