Chelsea’s January transfer window looks set to be a quiet one, even with Liam Rosenior now in charge.
The Blues are unlikely to see much action this month, though the summer window could tell a different story.
A number of changes might take place, including both signings and departures.
Geovany Quenda is already confirmed to join the squad, having spent some time at Cobham for rehabilitation. But there could also be some big exits.
Marc Cucurella has attracted interest from Manchester City in the past, and the defender may find himself on their radar again soon.
Speaking on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, journalist Simon Phillips said that City have been looking into Cucurella, and a serious approach could be made during the upcoming transfer window.
Cucurella recently put pen to paper on a new deal at Stamford Bridge, though it was only to raise his salary, not extend the contract itself.
As it stands, he has only two and a half years left on his contract.
From Chelsea’s point of view, they won’t want him playing out his final two years without some sort of extension or sale. City might view this as an opening worth exploring.
If he does leave the club, Chelsea may already have someone lined up. Jorrel Hato put in a solid performance against Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup over the weekend and looks ready to step into that role if needed.
Former boss Enzo Maresca was not all that high on Hato, but Rosenior is clearly backing him already.
City may view Maresca’s exit as another factor in their pursuit of Cucurella, sensing a possible opening to bring him in.
The Spaniard was clearly one of Maresca’s preferred choices during his time in West London.
Across less than two seasons, Cucurella made 79 appearances under the Italian, a regular presence throughout his tenure.
Back in November, Maresca said of the full-back: “Cucu always gives us an advantage, and we are delighted with him.”
