The majority of Manchester United players have been able to take a step back from their domestic proceedings with players on international duty with their respective nations.
Michael Carrick’s men – who are currently sat third in the Premier League with seven matches to play – will return to action on 13 April when they welcome Leeds United to Old Trafford.
Securing Champions League football for 2026/27 is the primary objective to achieve between now and the season’s end – and winning football matches is the easiest way to do so.
With the men’s team facing a period without a match because of international football, the attention has turned to Manchester United Women.
Third in the Women’s Super League, Marc Skinner’s side are showing signs of progress.
They are in the Champions League quarter-finals, having lost the first leg 3-2 to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, and they recently lost the League Cup final to Chelsea.
Just like the men’s outfit, what Skinner and his entourage hope to achieve is a spot at Europe’s top table next season.
Now, they have 38 points from 19 outings and have three matches – against Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea – left to play.
Their ambitions of winning the title are over, however, after Manchester City put them to the sword on Saturday afternoon.
Fans turned up in their droves to watch United Women at Old Trafford but United were on the receiving end of a 3-0 loss, which began with a quick-fire double from Vivianne Miedema.
Kerstin Casparij added a third goal in the 49th minute and the home side were unable to respond.
With City taking charge of the title race with 49 points after 19 matches, they have now earned an unassailable lead over their fierce rivals.
It now seems like it’s matter of when – and not if! – Andree Jeglertz’s City will get their hands on the WSL title given how superior they are to the rest of the division.
Skinner, in the wake of his side’s defeat, consistently claimed that his side were suffering from fatigue after their tie with Bayern mid-week.
“I’m not disappointed with any of the players, I’m disappointed with the result,” Skinner said, per ESPN, before adding, “It’s a horrible result, but the players are giving everything.
“We’re limited [for squad availability] with just the amount of games we’ve had. I think players are giving you all they’ve got. We’re making characteristic mistakes because of fatigue mentally.”
The 43-year-old also pointed towards the strength of City’s bench as a reason behind why they came out on top at Old Trafford.
All in all, it’s clear that the bragging rights are possessed by the blue side of Manchester as things stand. Jeglertz’s side are a cut above the rest and United have plenty of work to do behind the scenes.
