In what has been an incredibly active start to the week in terms of transfers, Manchester City are reportedly interested in securing the services of another world-class player. As per Fabrizio Romano, the Cityzens have “made contact” to sign Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was called “sensational” by manager Luis Enrique, despite only having secured the return of homegrown sensation James Trafford a fortnight ago.
The Italian goalkeeper has only really become available in the last few days, as PSG have confirmed the signing of Lucas Chevalier and left Donnarumma out of their squad for the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The 26-year-old’s contract expires in the summer of 2026, and the Parisian giants have no intention of allowing him to leave on a free transfer, especially when they could recoup a significant fee for him this summer.
Romano reports that Enrique’s side are demanding €50 million, which equates to roughly £43.2 million, for the 74-cap Italian international, though the Cityzens believe this is too high a valuation. The good news for Pep Guardiola’s side is that there is no significant competition to sign Donnarumma at the moment, as Romano defiantly declared that fellow Premier League big-spenders Chelsea are “NOT” in the race to sign the goalkeeper. But, City should still act quickly, else other elite European clubs may enter the race to sign the Italian.
Another important aspect of Romano’s report is that a deal would only be possible if Ederson were to leave the Etihad Stadium. This is likely in addition to the departure of Stefan Ortega Moreno, who did not travel to Italy to participate in City’s preseason friendly against Palermo.
Romano also believes that there has been an update on Ederson’s status at the Etihad Stadium. Earlier in the summer, he refuted claims made by French outfit L’Equipe, who said that Turkish giants Galatasaray had made a bid for the Brazilian goalkeeper. However, he is now reporting that Galatasaray have made a “direct approach” to Hugo Viana and co. as they look to orchestrate a deal to sign the 31-year-old.
Although there are no details about City’s asking price, or whether Ederson would be able to agree personal terms with the Turkish club, as of yet, the Brazilian is the Lions’ “main target” in the goalkeeping department. Romano also reiterated that this deal will be “key” for City’s pursuit of Donnarumma.
