Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has made a remarkable admission as the controversy surrounding the club’s financial misconduct continues to dominate English football.

City were found guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial regulations following an investigation covering nine seasons between 2009 and 2018.

On September 29, the Premier League confirmed that an independent commission had upheld all charges concerning serious financial breaches, alongside the majority relating to failures to cooperate.

The findings included artificially inflated commercial revenues and misleading financial accounts, raising questions about City’s success during that period.

Manchester United are among the clubs potentially affected, having finished runners-up to their neighbours in the 2011/12 and 2017/18 Premier League campaigns.

Former United stars have weighed in, with Wayne Rooney calling for relegation and Rio Ferdinand and David de Gea reacting to speculation about retrospective honours.

Michael Carrick, meanwhile, admitted the situation affects him personally, although he acknowledged that receiving a retrospective medal could never recreate the experience of winning a title.

However, City continue to deny wrongdoing and officially lodged an appeal on October 1, arguing that the commission’s findings contain significant errors.

The Premier League confirmed the appeal will be heard privately, with potential sanctions still undecided.

Now, City’s manager has delivered a striking assessment of how rival supporters might view the scandal.

Manchester City manager admits he would call club cheats

Enzo Maresca has acknowledged that he would describe Manchester City as cheats if he supported Manchester United or Arsenal.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, the Italian discussed the impact of the financial controversy.

According to The Guardian, Maresca said: “If I am an Arsenal fan or a United fan and you are a City fan, I can tell you: ‘Hey, my friend, you cheat’.”

He suggested supporters have suffered more than players or staff because they must confront criticism from rival fans.

City defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, prompting exuberant celebrations despite the ongoing controversy.

Maresca defended those celebrations, insisting his players remain focused on winning matches rather than matters outside their control.

Captain Ruben Dias similarly maintained that the squad trusts the club and remains calm.

With City’s appeal unresolved, uncertainty continues to surround the club’s future.
