Manchester City suffered an injury blow during their 2-nil win over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceràmica on Tuesday night. Nico had to be substituted in the 56th minute of City’s win in Spain. At the time, Nico had been one of the best players on the pitch for Pep Guardiola’s side, playing in midfield. There is a case to be made that City lost control of midfield after Nico was substituted.

Manchester City take on Aston Villa at Villa Park this Sunday. It is a crucial Premier League match that will be a test for Pep Guardiola’s side. Heading into the match it appears that City will be sweating over the fitness of Nico, given his importance to Manchester City’s midfield.

Pep Guardiola believes that Nico’s injury isn’t a serious one.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola provided an update on the condition of Nico following his team’s win at the Estadio de la Ceràmica. Nico sustained what seemed to be a foot injury after being on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey. In quotes relayed by the Manchester Evening News, Pep Guardiola: “Nico had a knock on his feet, we will see.”

Nico has filled the void left by Rodri’s absence superbly. He has become more than just a Rodri stand-in. The Spanish midfielder has added his own strengths to the number six role that his crucial to his team. His drive from midfield and strength in duels have been a critical element to City’s play. As Pep Guardiola’s side has extended its unbeaten run to nine matches, Nico has been at the heart of it. He is growing into life as a City player. It is now clear why City were so keen to sign him from FC Porto.

This weekend, Manchester City take on Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side started this season slowly. But they are growing into the 25/26 season and possess a quality midfield. If Nico is fit, he’ll have a key role to play on Sunday. It now remains to be seen if he can play at Villa Park, which is a venue that City have struggled at in recent seasons.
