Late in Manchester City’s crucial 1-nil win over Bournemouth, it became apparent that Pep Guardiola’s side need Jack Grealish back and firing. While he hasn’t been at his best this season he has a vital role to play for the remainder of this season. That became apparent as the second half unfolded at the Vitality Stadium.

The England international is a crucial piece of the champion’s game plan. Without Grealish, the left wing was filled by Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku against Bournemouth. Doku replaced Matheus Nunes on the left wing in the 55th minute of yesterday’s game. Given how the game played out it wasn’t a role that either player particularly thrived in.

With Andoni Iraola’s side keen to press the champions both players were guilty of giving away possession during yesterday’s game which played into Bournemouth’s hands. Pep Guardiola’s side needed control in yesterday’s game to keep Bournemouth at bay. Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes both couldn’t do the job that was required by their team. Both were guilty of cheaply giving away possession as the game unfolded. It isn’t a knock on either player but what Grealish adds to the world champions isn’t a strength of either player.

Manchester City need Grealish back to his best

This is where Jack Grealish comes in. While he won’t immediately solve the issues from yesterday’s performance he does add the element that was missing late in proceedings at the Vitality Stadium. Invariably Manchester City look at the dazzling best when Grealish starts on the left wing. He provides the control City requires with his ability to maintain possession and link up with his teammates. It was sorely lacking late in yesterday’s game as Bournemouth pressed for an equaliser.

The England international surprisingly made his return from a groin injury to the City squad yesterday as an unused substitute. The challenge is now there for Grealish to rediscover his best form. Manchester City will need his influence as the stakes rise for the remainder of this season.
