Manchester United’s midfield search has now taken them to the LaLiga champions with a Barcelona star on their shortlist.
The Red Devils are looking to reboot their midfield ahead of next season as the face an uncertain time with their current options.
At Michael Carrick’s disposal, Bruno Fernandes, Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo are the only senior options in a central midfield role.
Under Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils were operating in a 3-4-3 with two central midfielders and a more cental attack with dynamic wing-backs on the flanks.
As such, Casemiro and club captain Bruno Fernandes were the prefered pair for the Portuguese manager.
However, with Carrick now in charge, United have reverted back to a 4-2-3-1, with Fernandes able to move into his preferred central attacking midfield role, seeing Casemiro and Mainoo set up behind him.
In the long-run, United need a replacement for 33-year-old Casemiro who’s due to come to the end of his contract this summer.
Alongside him, Manuel Ugarte has under performed since arriving from PSG, so the midfield is a clear priority for recruitment.
Now, Mundo Deportivo has reported that United have added Barcelona’s Marc Casado to their shortlist.
The Red Devils have reportedly made contact to inquire about the 22-year-old, however they aren’t the only Premier League side to be interested.
Wolves are also understood to be interested, having keen links with his agent Jorge Mendes.
Alongside the pair, closer to home for Marc Casado, Atletico Madrid are also keen on the youngster, who see him as a strong replacement for Conor Gallagher.
In the mix for Atletico is Wolves star, Joao Gomes, who has also been considered by Manchester United for a January move.
For now, United’s stance is to hold off on any transfers under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, only committing to a move if a long-term target becomes available.
