Emiliano Martinez to Manchester United could still be on as we near the January transfer window

Manchester United are once again linked with a goalkeeper, even after signing in that position during the summer. The pressure on Ruben Amorim adds to the scrutiny, and questions about squad balance remain. According to Football Insider, former chief scout Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period, believes the pursuit of Emiliano Martinez could return. He said United might make a move for him either in January or next summer.

Brown said United came close to signing Martinez before talks with Aston Villa broke down. The goalkeeper wanted the transfer, but the clubs failed to agree. United instead brought in Senne Lammens. Altay Bayindir now starts in the Premier League, and Andre Onana has gone out on loan.

Even so, Amorim keeps asking for another goalkeeper. Brown is sure Martinez is still on United’s shortlist. He described the 33-year-old as commanding, a strong shot-stopper, and a character in the dressing room. He added that United lack those traits and a fresh attempt to sign Martinez would make sense.

I’m still surprised they didn’t get Martinez.

“They wanted him, he wanted the move, but at the end of the day, they couldn’t agree with Villa, so the deal collapsed.

“They’ve gone and got Lammens now, but Amorim has been saying he still wants a goalkeeper, so the recruitment team will be looking at their options.

“I have no doubt Martinez is still one of those, because he’s a top-class goalkeeper and one who would immediately solve the issues they’ve had recently.

“He’s strong, imposing, a top shot-stopper and a character in the dressing room, which it feels like they’re sorely lacking at Man United at the moment.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them go back in for him, especially with the manager still demanding a goalkeeper, whether that’s in January or next summer.”

Would Martinez solve United’s problems?

Emiliano Martinez rebuilt his career after leaving Arsenal for Aston Villa. He rose to prominence with Argentina and played a crucial role in their World Cup win. His penalty saves and composure in big moments made him a hero. The Argentine’s shot-stopping, distribution, and aerial strength stand among the best in football. He controls his box with authority and shows leadership in high-pressure matches. These qualities make Martinez appealing to any club that needs stability at the back.

Manchester United still face a choice. They already signed Senne Lammens and continue to start Altay Bayindir, which raises doubts about another addition. Yet Martinez’s experience and authority could give Amorim what the current group lacks. At 33, his age and price remain concerns, but his Premier League record shows his reliability.

With United rebuilding and with Casemiro set for a 2026 exit, the need for proven leaders grows stronger. In a market where Liverpool are keen to trump United for Jarrad Branthwaite, hesitation could be costly. Martinez may carry a high fee, but his influence could provide exactly what United need to compete at the top again and share the duties with Lammens.
