The 2024/25 season was nothing short of a nightmare for Manchester United. We finished 15th in the Premier League, which is embarrassing for a club of our stature. Reaching the Europa League final was a big thing, but we lost there, too, to Tottenham Hotspur. The arrival of Ruben Amorim raised hopes in the middle of the previous season, but the season was already out of hand by then. Now, we are out of European competition in 2025/26. The atmosphere at Old Trafford had become depressing, but one thing is clear that this club was not built just to survive.
This summer, the club have shown momentum. Signing names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo show that the team are ready to fight. The arrival of Diogo Leon has also strengthened the foundation for the future. However, last season did not just show weakness in attack; the biggest concern was about defence, especially Andre Onana’s mistakes let many matches slip away. Looking at Amorim’s style, the search for a reliable goalkeeper has now begun.
According to Fichajes, both Manchester United and Newcastle United are trying to bring Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. We had reported our club’s interest in the Real Madrid goalkeeper earlier in our blog as well. Lunin performed brilliantly for Real Madrid in the absence of Thibaut Courtois. However, Real Madrid are currently in no mood to sell him as they need a reliable backup for Courtois.
This 26-year-old Ukrainian goalkeeper possesses sharp reaction, is commanding on high balls and also looks strong in saving penalties. If Manchester United sign him, then Amorim’s tactical game can get a new face of trust. The special thing is that Lunin no longer wants to sit on the bench.
We believe the only way to restore the trust that Onana has broken is to bring in a goalkeeper who can provide stability. Lunin is not only young, but he also has the big-match temperament. The Ukrainian has performed under pressure, even in the absence of Courtois at a club like Real Madrid.
He is now at the stage where he needs to play regularly, and United can give him that platform. Amorim also needs a goalkeeper who is capable of passing, building attacks from the back and has safe hands. Lunin ticks all the boxes. Newcastle United are also interested in him, but if United act at the right time, it is possible to bring Lunin to Old Trafford. In this rebuild, a goalkeeper like Lunin could bring back a glimpse of the old Manchester United – a club that were not built to give up.
