Manchester United have built a reputation for developing young players, with their academy producing generations of first-team regulars.

Their latest crop has attracted attention as the club looks to rebuild under Michael Carrick.

JJ Gabriel has emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in that group, earning a reputation for his goalscoring ability despite his age.

The teenager made his senior debut during pre-season against Atletico Madrid, offering a glimpse of the potential United believe they have in their hands.

However, his pathway into competitive first-team football has become a point of disagreement between the club and his representatives.

That tension has now developed into a major transfer situation, with several European heavyweights monitoring every development.

According to SPORT, Manchester United are refusing to release JJ Gabriel from his registration immediately, blocking his hoped-for departure and potentially forcing him to wait until the January transfer window before moving on.

The 16-year-old is determined to leave Old Trafford, but United have declined his request to terminate his registration.

His exit is increasingly expected, although the precise route and timing remain unresolved.

The dispute centres partly on Gabriel’s opportunities to progress into senior football.

His camp reportedly wanted him to receive meaningful first-team minutes this season, while United believed his development needed to be managed carefully.

Gabriel and his family formally requested his release in September, and he has not trained with the club since the breakdown in relations.

The youngster’s situation also became more complicated when he turned 16 earlier this month.

That milestone could open a route to a European club, potentially through eligibility for an EU passport via his family, although any move would still need to comply with the relevant regulations.

United have reportedly considered legal action if a rival attempts to exploit a loophole to secure his signature.

Barcelona were among the first major clubs to explore the possibility of signing JJ Gabriel, with the teenager travelling to the city amid discussions about his future.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been linked with the forward, but recent reporting suggests the race has narrowed to Madrid and PSG.

Both clubs are working towards an agreement ahead of January.

Barcelona’s position may have weakened because of the financial demands associated with the deal.

The overall package could reach €10 million to €15 million, although Barcelona are reportedly reluctant to enter a bidding war, despite Gabriel having been linked with a preference for their sporting project.

Gabriel scored 23 goals in 23 Under-18 Premier League appearances last season and was named the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year.

His departure could leave the club with only a comparatively modest compensation payment rather than the kind of transfer fee normally associated with a player of his potential.
