Manchester United boss undermines the Europa League: 'Not a big thing'

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim bluntly claims that the Europa League triumph is not a big deal for the club. The Red Devils will face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday night at the San Mames Stadium.

United have endured a miserable campaign as the club has plummeted to 16th position in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, their Europa League final opponent, Spurs, have also not fared too well, currently 17th in the Premier League table.

Man United’s miserable start to the season cost Erik ten Hag his job after his recurring failure to rejuvenate them. The Red Devils appointed Amorim, who enjoyed incredible success in Portugal as Sporting CP manager for the past several seasons.

Amorim won three Liga Portugal titles along with other trophies and established Sporting CP as a top club in Portugal. The United boss used the same tactical philosophy after joining the Manchester Giants, but the current squad failed to adjust.

Speaking to CBS Sports (via the Mirror), Amorim bluntly claimed that the Europa League competition is not a big thing for United. He said:

“If you win the Europa League in Manchester United, I’m sorry, it is not a big thing. You need to go for Premier League and the Champions League – and we are so far away. That is my feeling. Of course it would be a title, a European title, but it is not enough.”

The statement could slightly divide the United fanbase, as many would agree with Amorim and appreciate his ambitions with United. However, Amorim’s poor start to United’s tenure has concerned the fanbase, as some believe he could have changed his tactics.

There is a valid argument that a temporary change in tactics could have helped the current squad gain some momentum. Under Amorim, United have played 40 matches in all competitions, winning 16 games, while drawing eight and losing 16 times.

The 40-year-old will use the summer transfer window to add players who suit his tactical profile. However, United’s financial condition forces them to sell players to raise the transfer budget before they can buy new ones.

This is the reason that makes the potential Europa League victory more important, as it would help United qualify for the Champions League. The Champions League competition provides a significant financial boost to the club, and every source of revenue is crucial for United right now.
