Manchester United could still benefit from one of last summer’s biggest departures despite the player leaving Old Trafford almost a year ago.
Smart business completed during previous transfer windows could now hand the club an unexpected financial boost.
United inserted several protective clauses into recent player sales, and one of those agreements may soon begin paying dividends.
That is because Chelsea are now prepared to listen to offers for a former Manchester United academy graduate after a disappointing spell at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are willing to sell Alejandro Garnacho this summer and, crucially for United, the deal that took him across England included a 10% sell-on clause, as the Manchester Evening News reported.
Any permanent transfer would therefore see Manchester United receive a percentage of the transfer fee without needing to negotiate directly with the buying club.
Chelsea are understood to be open to cashing in after Alejandro Garnacho struggled to establish himself during his first season in west London.
The Argentina international arrived from Manchester United in August 2025 in a deal worth around £40 million, but failed to consistently impress during his debut campaign.
Despite attracting interest from elsewhere, Chelsea are not interested in another temporary move.
Italian reports have linked Roma with a loan approach, but sources indicate the Blues will only consider permanent offers for the 22-year-old.
That stance could prove beneficial for Manchester United, whose sell-on clause would only become relevant if Chelsea complete a full transfer.
Garnacho originally joined Manchester United’s academy in 2020 before rapidly progressing through the youth ranks.
He made his senior debut in April 2022 and quickly became one of the club’s brightest young talents.
Across his Manchester United career, the winger made 144 appearances in all competitions, scoring 26 goals while contributing 22 assists before his move to Chelsea.
His first season at Stamford Bridge proved far less productive.
Garnacho finished the campaign with 8 goals and 4 assists from 43 appearances across all competitions, numbers that ultimately failed to convince Chelsea that he should remain a long-term part of their project.
With Chelsea now prepared to sanction a permanent departure and several clubs monitoring the situation, Manchester United will watch developments closely.
