Manchester United have decided to sell a defender after eight years at Old Trafford as Michael Carrick reshapes his squad for the new season.

United have already focused heavily on recruitment during the summer transfer window.

The club have already signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to strengthen their midfield.

They are now working on a third addition in that area.

However, successful transfer windows also require departures.

United currently have plenty of defensive options, with several players having spent many years at the club.

Diogo Dalot joined United in 2018 and has since developed into a senior figure within the squad.

The Portugal international even stepped in as temporary captain during last season’s clash with Aston Villa.

Harry Maguire has also spent a long period at Old Trafford.

The experienced centre-back recently signed a new contract after becoming an important player under Carrick.

However, another defender now appears to leave permanently.

Defender expected to leave Manchester United

According to Simon Stone via BBC Sport, academy graduate Tyler Fredricson is not involved with the first-team group that have travelled to Finland ahead of United’s pre-season opener against Wrexham.

United expect the 21-year-old to complete a permanent move away this summer.

Europe currently looks the most likely destination for the central defender.

Fredricson joined Manchester United’s academy in 2018 and progressed through the club’s youth system.

He played an important role during United’s successful FA Youtb Cup campaign in 2022.

However, an injury ruled him out of the final.

The defender signed his first professional contract that same year before earning opportunities around the senior squad.

Tyler Fredricson made his Premier League debut under Ruben Amorim in April 2025.

He started against Wolverhampton Wanderers alongside fellow academy graduate Harry Amass and earned praise from the former United head coach.

A proposed January move to Celtic later collapsed after Fredricson suffered an injury before the deal could be completed.

United now appear ready to sanction his permanent exit as Carrick reduces the size of his defensive group.

A move could offer Fredricson the regular senior football he needs at this stage of his development.
