Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has called up Lisandro Martinez for friendly matches against El Salvador and Costa Rica. Having stayed out of action since early February, the Manchester United defender will reunite with his Albiceleste teammates during the upcoming international break.

Lisandro Martinez Part of Latest Argentina Squad Despite Injury

An Injury-Ridden Campaign

Martinez has spent the majority of the current campaign out of action due to fitness issues. In September, the Argentine star picked up a foot injury that kept him out of action for around four months.

United had a key defender back at their disposal when Martinez finally made his comeback in January. But their joy was short-lived as he suffered a serious knee injury after playing only three matches.

The Argentine international was initially ruled out for the season. But Erik ten Hag has recently suggested he could return to action in the final weeks of the campaign.

Why Is Martinez Named in Argentina’s Squad?

On Tuesday, Lionel Scaloni announced his Argentina squad for friendly matches against El Salvador and Costa Rica. Surprisingly, the manager included Martinez’s name in his 26-man list despite the defender’s injury.

According to ESPN, Scaloni wants the Manchester United star to continue his rehab process close to his Argentina teammates despite being unable to play. Already preparing his team for the Copa America, the manager wants his key players to reunite in the upcoming international break.

Manchester United Set for Major Injury Returns

Martinez’s possible return in April will be a significant squad boost for the Red Devils, who have struggled for defensive consistency throughout the season. As United prepare to make a final push in the Premier League’s top-four race, Erik ten Hag is expected to have a few key stars back at his disposal.

Aaron Wan Bissaka, Rasmus Hojlund, and Harry Maguire are expected to come back against Liverpool on Sunday. Earlier this week, Mason Mount also returned to United’s training after four months. The English midfielder could be available for selection when United meet Brentford in their first game after the international break on March 30.
