Manchester United are close to welcoming back Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez

Manchester United finally enter this week with a sense of belief that has been missing for much of the season. Under Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils finally displayed a bit of confidence and a good result after months of struggle. Their win over Sunderland before the international break gave Amorim his 50th victory in charge.

He greeted that milestone with a silent satisfaction. Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko scored the goals that showed their growing stability in attack. The structure behind them looks far more secure now. After three straight wins at Old Trafford, United now travel to Anfield to face a wounded Liverpool side. The Merseyside club has lost three games in a row across all competitions.

This time, Amorim prepares with almost a full-strength squad. Only two players, Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez, remain uncertain and on the sidelines. According to a report from Standard, Mazraoui missed recent matches because he picked up a knock against Chelsea. He could return for Sunday’s clash if he is fit on time.

The Moroccan offers depth to Amorim’s system as a right-back and wing-back. So, the Portuguese manager continues to manage his recovery carefully. Meanwhile, Martinez keeps working his way back from a serious knee injury that he suffered against Crystal Palace in February.

The Argentine now trains on the grass again and rebuilds fitness after months out. Both players could return soon, possibly against Liverpool or shortly after. The timing matters as Amorim refines his system and restores the team’s identity. However, the return date of the Argentine is not yet fixed.

The tactical balance Amorim seeks

Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation demands boldness and control from his defenders. He expects centre-backs to handle space, push high, and start attacks with composure. That approach makes both Mazraoui and Martinez vital to his system.

Martinez usually plays on the left side of the back three. He brings proper, accurate passing ability and fierce tackling that suit Amorim’s pressing style. He often steps into midfield and wins duels, giving United the balance they have lacked during his absence.

Mazraoui, meanwhile, presents a tactical puzzle. He can play as a right-sided centre-back or as a wing-back, which gives Amorim more flexibility but creates competition for positions. Amorim prefers a fixed back three and often uses Matthijs de Ligt in the central role.

That setup could allow Martinez to walk straight back into the starting side. Mazraoui may have to fight with Diogo Dalot or Luke Shaw for minutes. Martinez’s aggression and leadership traits will secure his place once he regains full fitness. Mazraoui’s versatility keeps him in contention across several roles.

However, their returns will strengthen United’s defence and help Amorim gain more tactical clarity for the crucial phase of the season. United fans can sense the air shifting again. Do you think Amorim’s structure can finally steady the Red Devils? We have to wait and watch if Martinez’s return marks the real turning point in United’s season.
