The Best FIFA awards were first introduced in 2016, with the first ceremony in January 2017.
First won by Cristiano Ronaldo, the likes of Luka Modric, Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi and Vinicius Junior have all won the men’s award.
Meanwhile, the Women’s award has been awarded to Carli Lloyd, Lieke Martens, Marta, Megan Rapinoe, Lucy Bronze and both Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati on multiple occasions.
Today, there has been an announcement of the men’s and women’s nominations for the Best FIFA XI awards.
This has seen two current Manchester United players nominated for the awards.
These two individuals are men’s midfielder Bruno Fernandes and women’s goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
Fernandes’ inclusion in the nominations comes after a brilliant 2024/25 season, in the midst of the worst campaign of the club’s Premier League history where they finished 15th.
United’s captain recorded 19 goals and 19 assists across all competitions.
This was the third most productive season of his career in Manchester, and second most in the Premier League alone.
For Tullis-Joyce, her nomination comes after sharing the golden glove with Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton as she recorded 13 clean sheets.
This saw her included in the PFA and Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) team of the season.
The United States international joined from Seattle Reign FC in September 2023 and got her chance at the starting spot after the departure of Mary Earps to Paris Saint-Germain the following summer.
She excelled at the opportunity once it was given to her, as United finished third in the WSL.
Neither Bruno Fernandes or Phallon Tullis-Joyce are likely to win the men’s or women’s award, with Ousmane Dembele and Lamine Yamal, Chloe Kelly and Aitana Bonmati favourites to win either award.
Despite this, the fact United have players being nominated is only a good thing for the club and overall progression.
