Manchester United want to sign Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer, but will face competition

The 2024/25 season was nothing less than a nightmare for Manchester United. Finishing 15th in the Premier League and then losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final was a big failure for the club. Exiting European competitions for next season was another setback. The arrival of Ruben Amorim raised hopes, but he took charge of the team in the middle of the previous season, so the change could not show immediate effect.

Now the club are trying to stand up once again. By signing big names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo at the beginning of the summer, the message is clear – the team want to move forward. Youngster Diogo Leon has also been added to the squad, which reflects Amorim’s long-term thinking, but the real problem still remains, and that is the lack of a reliable striker.

Will Aleksandar Mitrovic be the answer?

Now a new name has emerged – Aleksandar Mitrovic. Several reports claim that Manchester United, as well as Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, are also keen to sign the Serbian striker. According to a report by CaughtOffside, Al Hilal are pricing him at around €30 million. That’s no big deal for a club like United, especially when the need is so clear.

Mitrovic has an impressive record. He has scored 68 goals in 79 games for Al Hilal. He also scored 14 goals in 24 games for Fulham in the Premier League 2022/23. His strength, experience and Premier League habit could make him an asset to Amorim’s team.

Mitrovic: A smart move or an age-old deal?

Mitrovic’s price tag suggests this could be a cheap and sensible deal. Amorim is looking for a forward who can make an immediate impact. Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee are young but have been erratic. Mitrovic’s experience and physicality fit into Amorim’s style, who understands the importance of a striker who can create space in the box and hold the ball.

His previous experience in the Premier League works in his favour. He will take no time to adjust, which will be helpful in Amorim’s tight schedule. However, 30 years of age does not fit into Amorim’s young squad idea, as shown by the choice of 26-year-olds like Matheus Cunha. Therefore, United should take a two-pronged approach – bring in Mitrovic for now, but also keep an eye on a young striker like Benjamin Sesko for the future. Doing so will give the team both experience and energy, which will put it on the path to becoming a top club again.
