Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign former academy player and current West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper, Sam Johnstone, in the summer, to be their no.2 goalkeeper.

Johnstone, who joined the Hawthorns in 2018, will be a free agent in the summer and he is looking likely to part ways with the Midlands club for free.

The Red Devils currently have Dean Henderson as deputy to no.1 David De Gea, and Henderson's future has been up in the air for some time now.

There have been links during the last winter transfer window about Henderson leaving United in search of game-time, although in the end, a move didn't materialise for the former Sheffield United man.

United's goalkeeping department, which comprises Spaniard De Gea, Dean Henderson, summer signing Tom Heaton, and former Stoke shot-stopper Lee Grant, might undergo alteration in the upcoming summer window, as per information in a report.

According to journalist Alan Nixon of the Sun, the Old Trafford club are looking to get rid of Dean Henderson from its ranks and are eyeing a move for Albion's Johnstone on a free.

Johnstone is said to be United's 'first choice' to be the no.2 to De Gea, although a deal is far from done now.

Other clubs are also interested in the former Manchester United player, namely West Ham, Tottenham and Southampton.

It now remains to be seen whether a homecoming is on the cards for Englishman Johnstone. Last summer, former United player Tom Heaton completed his homecoming as he joined the Reds as a free agent.
