Manchester United continues to struggle with results as Ruben Amorim faces an uncertain future and strong criticism. The club achieved their lowest-ever Premier League finish last season, and also suffered a knockout at the hands of Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup this season.
The Fans are clearly frustrated, and there is a strong urge to replace the Portuguese manager. According to FourFourTwo, the club placed Cesc Fàbregas on their shortlist if they decide to part ways with Amorim. The idea of appointing such a high-profile former player adds more tension to an already difficult situation.
English fans are well aware of the future of Fàbregas. The Spaniard signed for Arsenal in 2003 and left the Emirates in 2011. The 38-year-old was one of the best midfielders in the world during his tenure in the Premier League, and possessed qualities like vision, precise passing, and the ability to control the tempo of the matches. After his retirement, he is serving as the manager of Como in Serie A.
The 38-year-old focused on developing younger players and introducing ideas that helped the team win promotion to Serie A. This was a major achievement, and hence it gained attention. While Amorim continues to fight for his job at Old Trafford, links with Fàbregas suggest the club are already considering possible alternatives.
Fàbregas has shown promise with his start in management. The Spaniard took over the reins of the youth teams at Como before joining as the interim manager of the senior side in November 2023. The 38-year-old then became the full-time head coach of the side in July 2024 and helped them earn promotion in the Serie A. Now, his side sit clear of the relegation zone, and this is clear proof that Fàbregas’ tactics are working.
The Spaniard stresses build-up play, control in the midfield, and also a compact defence. He often uses 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation and focuses on short passing, rotations in the midfield, and the technical qualities of the player to break the defences of the opposition team. The Spaniard’s tactics are much like those of Arsene Wenger or Pep Guardiola.
However, we still have doubts about whether he is ready for a club of the stature of Manchester United. Meanwhile, Amorim carries a dismal record of just 27.3% league win rate in 33 games, and all these have already frustrated the fans. However, if the club chooses an inexperienced coach like Fàbregas, then there is a significant risk yet again. There are also reports stating that he once claimed that United “ruin” players, which only adds to concerns.
The Spaniard has said he wants to manage in the Premier League one day, but the step up would be huge. Meanwhile, Tyrel Malacia is close to returning to training after his recent absence. At the same time, voices like Matt Le Tissierargue that United should consider Oliver Glasner over Gareth Southgate. These debates show how many options the club is considering. Whether United move for Fàbregas or not, the decision must be decisive at a time when Old Trafford cannot afford another mistake.
