Manchester United are in desperate need of a complete squad overhaul this summer after a disastrous 2024/25 season. They need to move on the surplus and replace them with fresh blood to be competitive next term.
One area that the Red Devils must bolster is the midfield unit. Ruben Amorim has plenty of midfield options, but the majority or either inconsistent or not up to the quality to play in his distinctive 3-4-2-1 system.
Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are past their prime years, with the former set to leave the club on a free transfer in June. Casemiro, too, could be offloaded if INEOS can find a club that is willing to fulfil his high wage demands. Manuel Ugarte has blown hot and cold during his debut season in English football, while Mason Mount’s Old Trafford career has been blighted by injury problems thus far.
Thus, Amorim needs new midfield technicians who can fit into his tactical plan and system at the club. According to a report from Forbes, Manchester United are interested in signing Juventus flop Douglas Luiz.
Just 12 months ago, Douglas Luiz was bossing the Aston Villa midfield. The central midfielder enjoyed a standout 2023/24 campaign that would see him chip in with 10 goals and five assists, playing a key role in Aston Villa’s qualification to the Champions League. This led to a big-money move to Juventus last summer, as the Brazilian decided to make the step up in his career.
However, the 26-year-old has endured a forgettable time in Turin, and Juventus are ready to cut their losses on him after just a season. Luiz has made just three Serie A starts for Juventus and struggled to break into the first XI. The aforementioned report adds that the South American is headed back to the Premier League, with Man United and Nottingham Forest keen to sign him.
Luiz is a versatile midfielder, offering technical ability, energy, creativity and dynamism to the team. He covers a lot of ground, using his running power and stamina to press opponents and retain possession. The Brazilian is equally comfortable in possession and capable of building up attacks from a deeper midfield role.
The midfielder fits the profile that Amorim desires at the club, and his consistency, along with availability and Premier League experience, is another crucial bonus. At 26, Luiz has entered the peak years of his career, and United certainly would benefit from having him in their squad.
All in all, the ex-Villa man can be a smart option to replace Eriksen in Amorim’s team.
