Manchester United face Champions League stadium uncertainty

Manchester United face fresh stadium uncertainty ahead of their return to the Champions League this season.

Michael Carrick’s side are back in Europe’s elite competition for the first time since the 2023/24 campaign after finishing third in the Premier League last season.

Their league-phase opponents have now been confirmed, with United drawn against Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Sporting CP, RB Leipzig, Villarreal, Sabah and one other opponent.

One of those fixtures will bring another meeting with Atletico after United beat the Spanish side 2-1 during pre-season in Stockholm.

Bryan Mbeumo scored twice that day as Carrick’s team came from behind to win the Snapdragon Cup.

However, the Champions League can occasionally create unusual stadium situations.

Chelsea recently confirmed that Shakhtar Donetsk will play their 2026/27 Champions League home matches at Stamford Bridge, subject to regulatory approval.

Shakhtar have previously staged European games away from Ukraine in cities including Hamburg and Warsaw, with London now set to become their latest temporary base.

United could now face a stadium question of their own before one of their eight league-phase fixtures.

Manchester United waiting for Champions League stadium decision

According to the Daily Mail, United are waiting to discover exactly where their away fixture against Como will be played.

Como hope to stage the match at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium, but the ground required major work to meet UEFA standards.

The Italian club have spent three months upgrading the venue. A stand was demolished and rebuilt, while the pitch, dressing rooms and media facilities have also been improved.

UEFA officials are now reportedly close to approving the stadium, although formal confirmation is still required.

If approval does not arrive, an alternative venue would be needed, with Sassuolo’s stadium previously discussed as an option.

The fixture could also produce a reunion with former United defender Willy Kambwala.

Como recently signed Kambwala on loan from Villarreal for the season, with an option to make the move permanent.

United supporters must therefore wait a little longer before knowing exactly where that European reunion will take place.
