In 2021, Manchester United spent 85 million euros to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, and everyone thought the England international was a slam dunk transfer after watching him completely shred the Bundesliga as the perfect partner in crime to the likes of Marco Reus, Paco Alcacer, and Erling Haaland over the years in the BVB attack.
Instead, Sancho was a monumental bust who collected a fat paycheck, squabbled with coaches, struggled on various loans, and did nothing but tank his transfer value to the point where the club is still having issues figuring out where to send him permanently; he will likely leave for free this coming summer transfer window.
And yet, Sancho’s struggles haven’t deterred Manchester United from thinking about signing another highly talented but equally mercurial – and less statistically impressive – Dortmund forward in Karim Adeyemi.
When he’s on the pitch, Adeyemi is capable of great things. But he’s not on the pitch often enough and, per a recent report from BILD, has been openly bashing manager Niko Kovac and causing problems in the locker room.
That same report from BILD goes on to state that Manchester United are interested in taking a gamble on Adeyemi as a transfer target, as they have held talks with the notorious Jorgen Mendes, with whom Man United do have a good relationship with via Cristiano Ronaldo, regarding a possible move for the disgruntled German international.
Adeyemi is lightning fast and does have a great eye for creating chances from nothing, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing that he doesn’t get along with Kovac because, well, no player with any ambition seems to care for him. Just look at Nico Schlotterbeck – or any Bayern Munich player he coached, for that matter.
The thing is, Adeyemi has an injury record, he’s caused controversy before, and he’s never met expectations at Dortmund. He’s boom or bust and could make sense at a fraction of what Sancho cost Man United years ago, but he has to give fans the worry that he could be the second coming of Sancho.
