Manchester United forward sends farewell message

Manchester United’s transfer business rarely stops completely once the English window shuts, given several European leagues run to their own separate deadlines.

Austria is one of those, with clubs there permitted to complete deals right through until Thursday evening, days after Premier League business had already concluded.

That extra window proved decisive for one of United’s academy graduates, whose path to Old Trafford’s first team had grown increasingly blocked in recent seasons.

Gabriele Biancheri fought off competition from Chelsea to join United from Cardiff City back in February 2023, arriving as a 16-year-old with a reputation built on a prolific goalscoring record in Welsh youth football.

He wasted little time making an impression in Manchester either, scoring on his Under-18s debut and going on to net 17 goals in 27 appearances during a treble-winning 2023/24 campaign under Adam Lawrence.

Manchester United confirmed his permanent departure to Austrian club FC Wacker Innsbruck, completing the deal after the English transfer window had already closed.

Gabriele Biancheri never made a first-team appearance during his three-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, with his path to senior football complicated further by the emergence of Chido Obi, who occupied much of the same space in United’s forward pecking order.

He caught wider attention last September with the winning goal against Athletic Bilbao in the Premier League International Cup, a display that led some supporters to tip him as a future leader of United’s attack.

That promise never translated into a first-team breakthrough, and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Rotherham United, managing just 11 appearances during a difficult spell in League One.

Biancheri is not the only player to leave United after Tuesday’s English deadline passed. The club also sanctioned a season-long loan exit for Chido Obi to Willem II in the Netherlands earlier on Thursday, in search of regular first-team football of his own.

United opted against bringing in any new arrivals on deadline day itself, having earlier pursued Leicester’s Louis Page without completing a deal before time ran out.

The bulk of United’s summer spending had already gone into reshaping Michael Carrick’s midfield, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba all arriving alongside goalkeeper Karl Darlow to add further depth.

Those additions have already shown signs of paying off, with United securing their first win of the season in a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town last weekend following the opening-day defeat to Hull.

Biancheri posted a farewell message on Instagram following his exit, writing, “Thank you @manutd for everything over the last couple of years.”

His move to Innsbruck now offers the Wales youth international the regular senior football that eluded him throughout his time in Manchester, closing the book on a promising academy career that never quite crossed into the first team.
