Manchester United spent all of last summer chasing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. After being rejected by the Seagulls, the Red Devils seemed content to wait until the next offseason for the Cameroonian.
Now, though, Baleba’s poor form this season reportedly has Manchester United looking at other options to replace Casemiro this summer. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson have been the most commonly mentioned alternatives. Both are young and have huge upsides, like Baleba.
However, a new story from CaughtOffside claims that Manchester United are interested in Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães. This would be a great signing for the Red Devils.
Despite all their struggles under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United are third in the table and strong contenders to qualify for the Champions League this season. This resurgence has been spurred on by the signings of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Benjamin Sesko has played his part too, but Mbeumo and Cunha have consistently delivered compared to the young forward. This was to be expected, since both players had proven Premier League experience. These are the kind of players INEOS should be signing to get Man Utd back to the top and why Guimarães should be the club’s top midfield target.
Baleba, Wharton, and Anderson have loads of potential. But, with respect to their current clubs, their inconsistent performances often get overlooked. There’s no guarantee that they will progress once they get to Old Trafford. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that we were touting Kobbie Mainoo as the next world-class midfielder. He’s still young, but it’s a fact that he hasn’t developed like people expected him to.
Guimarães, on the other hand, has been a player in the spotlight at the center of a Champions League caliber team that was basically built around him.
To sum it up, Baleba, Wharton, and Anderson aren’t at Guimarães’ level yet. All three could reach those heights some day, but Man Utd can’t take that risk. If Guimarães is available in the summer, the Red Devils should do all they can to sign him.
