Manchester United have to sell before buying after spending over £120m

Manchester United have to sell players before buying anyone new after signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford during this transfer window. Despite enjoying a financial leeway after Sir Jim Ratcliffe injected cash, United are operating under a “sell to buy” philosophy.

The Red Devils endured a horrible last season, finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final. United sacked Erik ten Hag and appointed Ruben Amorim in the middle of the season to change their dwindling fortunes.

However, Amorim’s tactical philosophy, which was vastly different from Ten Hag’s tactics, proved too much for the current United squad. As United have maintained their complete faith in the new boss, they have to implement a massive summer squad overhaul.

This involves selling a lot of their surplus players who are under astronomical wages, while signing players that Amorim needs. The positive side of having no European competition next season is the lack of fixtures that Man United will play.

The situation allows Amorim to focus on quality over quantity, building a lean squad for the next season for United. The task remains daunting for the United hierarchy as selling their surplus in time to sign new players is short.

According to The Athletic, United have to sell players before buying anyone new after signing Mbeumo from Brentford this summer. Brentford rejected Man United’s second bid of £62.5m for Mbeumo, demanding a bigger fee than what they paid for Cunha.

If United meet the demands of Brentford, the combined price of Mbeumo and Cunha will exceed £120 million. Meanwhile, the Red Devils are finding it hard to sell Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford due to their astronomical wages.

At the same time, Alejandro Garnacho’s wages are reasonable, but his off-field behaviour is forcing United to lower the price demand. Other surplus players like Antony are still under United’s payroll, making things complicated for the club.
