The 2024/25 season has been nothing short of a nightmare for United. The club recorded one of their worst seasons in history, probably their worst, by finishing 15th in the Premier League. We also lost the Europa League final against Tottenham. What is more embarrassing is that we are now out of European football in 2025/26. Bringing in Ruben Amorim mid-season did not make much of a difference. His arrival seemed like hope, but the results kept slipping from his hands.
The club has certainly gained some momentum this summer. Signings of players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo added excitement. Along with this, young Diogo Leon was also signed, which seems like an investment for the future. These changes definitely reflect Amorim’s style with pace, energy and youthful enthusiasm. However, something else is brewing among these signings.
The news, first reported by French outlet L’Équipe and then Manchester Evening News in their live blog, is interesting. According to the report, United have held talks with FC Metz for 18-year-old striker Gueye. The club’s scouts have watched him several times in recent months. The player, who joined Metz in January from the Generation Foot academy, has registered five goals and one assist in 17 games in Ligue 2 in 2024/25 season. These numbers may seem modest, but given his age and maturity, they show promise.
The Senegal footballer’s biggest asset is his speed and knack for getting to the right place. He is adept at getting to long passes and is a threat in transition. A forward like Gueye would fit perfectly into Amorim’s 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 system, where speed and pressing are key. Although he doesn’t have top-flight experience yet, his potential cannot be ruled out.
As United fans, we think Gueye’s signing will be interesting, but we need to think with a cool head. The club has already acquired Cunha and Mbeumo, who are better options for Amorim’s high-intensity system. So the question is, is Gueye needed right now? Especially when we already have a striker like Rasmus Hojlund, who is struggling.
Gueye has potential, but he is just a project right now, not an immediate solution. He is being valued at €15 million, but United should not go above €10 million. If Metz are looking for money after promotion, a deal can be done, but the Red Devils must understand that investing in young talent also means giving it time. If Gueye does come in, he will need patience and good guidance. It is too early to expect him to become a star immediately. If Amorim really wants him, he probably considers him part of the long-term plan. Then this signing makes sense, because the club has no room for error this time. Last season has taken a lot away; now every decision has to be taken carefully.
