Manchester United are keen to offer Harry Maguire a new contract

Manchester United continue to reshape their squad under Ruben Amorim. Yet there are uncertainties over parts of the squad. The team’s defensive record, though occasionally solid, remains inconsistent. Amorim’s high-pressing approach brings energy and aggression, but it also exposes the backline. Despite these tactical shifts, the club still aims to create stability in the backline. That intention brings the focus back to Harry Maguire.

Fabrizio Romano reported on X that United have started talks with Maguire about a new contract. His current deal ends next June. Romano added that the club recently met the defender’s representatives face-to-face, and they plan more meetings soon. The club values Maguire’s contribution and leadership.

They see the 32-year-old as a key figure who keeps the balance within the group. Yet the situation feels uncertain. The England international regained some form after losing his place last season, and now, he stands at a crossroads. Originally, Maguire planned to leave Old Trafford in 2026, which hinted at a different direction not long ago. Reports suggest he might accept an offer from the Saudi Pro League if Amorim continues to limit his playing time. The Englishman’s personal ambitions and the club’s rebuilding plan now clash at the centre of this developing story.

Why a renewal for Maguire might slow United’s rebuild?

If United renew Maguire’s deal, it makes little sense in the long run. The Red Devils conceded 11 goals in seven Premier League games. These numbers expose clear gaps in their defensive setup. They average 1.57 goals conceded per game, which calls for an upgrade in the backline. The team presses high and records one of the league’s lowest PPDA figures. Yet that same aggression leaves them open when opponents counter. This inconsistency proves that Amorim still needs to improve his system instead of reinforcing outdated ideas.

If the club offers a new deal to Maguire, it could hold back United’s progress. It might restrict their activity in the transfer market. It could delay their search for a defensive leader who fits Amorim’s plans. Meanwhile, Dean Jones claims Manchester United want more competition for the goalkeeping spot. That statement shows the club’s plan to strengthen their defence from the back. Hence, if they do extend Maguire’s stay, it would send the wrong message. If United truly want to grow under Amorim, they must drop sentiment and focus on building a stronger, more adaptable defence.
