Manchester United’s clash with Bournemouth was overshadowed by controversy with two penalties and one red card awarded whilst some supporters argued another penalty should have been given.
Harry Maguire’s red card was at the centre of controversy with it awarded, alongside a penalty for Bournemouth, for a foul on Evanilson.
Commenting on the incident, the Premier League stated: “The referee’s call of penalty and red card for Maguire for the denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO) was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed to be a holding offence with no attempt to challenge for the ball.”
At the other end of the field, Matheus Cunha was awarded a penalty with this giving United the opportunity to take the lead which Bruno Fernandes did with ease.
But, some supporters believe that the team should have been awarded a second penalty for a challenge on Amad in the penalty area during the second half.
Speaking on the challenges, Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick stated: “For me, it’s two penalties.”
Now, according to the Daily Mail, the club are set to make a formal complaint to the referees body PGMOL over the second challenge on Amad that was not given as a penalty.
The source has also stated that the club believe that “yet another VAR blunder” has disrupted their efforts to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
It is understood that Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, plans to raise the matter with Howard Webb later today in a formal capacity.
In the meantime, supporters are left to debate whether the challenge on Amad is a foul or not whilst also being left to rue over what could have happened if the team were awarded a second penalty.
