Manchester United’s rebuild has forced the club to look at the midfield as that has been an issue for the longest time.
Recent seasons have been defined by transition.
Some departures felt necessary at the time, while others have aged differently as careers have taken unexpected turns.
In Italy, one former United regular has quietly reshaped his reputation at the highest level.
Now, whispers are growing that his story with English football may not be finished.
Scotland talisman Scott McTominay has been tipped to make a shock return to the Premier League, according to reports coming out of Italy.
The 29-year-old midfielder has been a revelation since leaving Manchester United in a £25 million move, reinventing himself at Napoli.
His debut campaign in Serie A was nothing short of breathtaking, as he helped deliver the league title and earned a Ballon d’Or nomination along the way.
That form has carried into the current campaign, with 10 goals in all competitions from midfield as Napoli chase a second consecutive Scudetto under Antonio Conte.
Despite his importance on the pitch, doubts have emerged about whether Napoli can hold onto their standout performers.
Leonardo Giammarioli, the club’s global business development officer, openly admitted those concerns in a recent interview with talkSPORT.
“Yeah, of course I’m worried,” said Giammarioli.
“But ultimately, especially Scott, who’s a very nice guy, we’re happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years, maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it.
“Look at Stuttgart, they wanted to keep Nick Woltemade, but when such an offer comes in, there’s not much you can do, when the player wants to go and money is important.
“It’s difficult for Italian teams, the Italian league continues to lose revenue.”
Those comments have only fuelled speculation about McTominay’s long-term future in Naples.
Italian outlet Tutto Mercato now claim the midfielder has one eye on a Premier League return.
The report suggests that a Premier League comeback remains a personal ambition, with Manchester United surprisingly leading the race.
For United, the idea of re-signing a player who has matured tactically and mentally abroad carries obvious appeal.
McTominay’s evolution into a goal-scoring midfield presence is precisely the profile the club have lacked at times in recent seasons.
Once viewed as a squad option at Old Trafford, Scott McTominay has since proven he can thrive as a central figure at a title-winning club.
