Liverpool enjoyed a memorable 2024/25 season, running away with the Premier League title, finishing 10 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal. Confidence was high, looking ahead to the 2025/26 season, when the tragic passing of Diogo Jota understandably affected the whole club. This season has been full of ups and downs and lots of frustration. A last-gasp equaliser from struggling Tottenham on March 15 left Liverpool frustrated. Following the conclusion of the game, Manchester United legend Roy Keane gave a savage assessment of Liverpool’s title defence. The Reds currently find themselves in fifth-place, 21 points off league leaders Arsenal.
Liverpool appeared on the verge of grinding out a big three points in their chase for Champions League football next season. Dominik Szoboszlai’s first-half free-kick had put Arne Slot’s team in front. Tottenham managed to stay in the game and created chances before Richarlison equalised in the 90th minute to earn Spurs a huge point in their scrap for survival. The result also gave interim boss Igor Tudor his first point in the Spurs hotseat.
Speaking on the Sky Sports broadcast after the game, Keane said: “Considering they were league champions last year, I’ve said it before, a number of times, Liverpool have been bad champions. They were bad champions a few years ago. They’re now 21 points behind Arsenal. What a drop off that is!
“There’s issues going on in the background, I think there’s bigger issues. There’s details there you can fix, with players tucking in. I think there’s stuff going on there. I don’t know if they’re all on the same page.”
“I look at this group of players, and their mentality and their work rate and their desire, what they’re doing on the training pitch, and I don’t like what I see from this Liverpool group. I just don’t like it,” added Keane.
