Manchester United officials have held talks with Andre Onana’s camp to discuss the goalkeeper’s future at Old Trafford and it looks like a decision has been made.

After a tough 2024/25 season for both United and Onana, questions were always likely to be asked about his long-term role with the club.

The Cameroon international lost his place after a string of high-profile errors in the Europa League, and Ruben Amorim didn’t hesitate to make changes. With United linked to several keepers this summer, his future has been far from certain.

Onana has refused to rule out an exit in recent interviews and – with INEOS planning an overhaul – his £47m price tag could factor into their thinking.

But after meeting with his representatives last week, United are finally moving toward clarity.

Onana set to stay, but United are still eyeing backup option

The Athletic reports that Onana is now expected to remain at United next season, following fresh talks between the club and his representatives.

While INEOS won’t be targeting a new No.1 this summer, the club could still look to bring in a backup keeper, especially with Altay Bayindir linked with a move away.

Back in March, Onana wasn’t worried about replacement talk, and it turns out he had reason to feel secure about his place heading into 2025/26.

Despite reports of Amorim wanting more competition for the position, the new head coach maintains a strong relationship with Onana and seems prepared to back him for another season.

Onana could also play a role off the pitch this summer. He’s already helping United in their push for Bryan Mbeumo, with the Brentford winger viewed as a key target for both club and country.

Onana staying means two big-name signings are off the table

Onana sticking around likely shuts the door on any big-money moves for a new starting keeper this summer.

Links to Emiliano Martinez have cooled, and with United needing to be careful with spending, a deal for someone like Gianluigi Donnarumma looks highly unlikely.

That said, United are still expected to add depth behind Onana. With Bayindir possibly moving on, the door remains open for another keeper, just not a headline-grabbing starter.

James Trafford has been mentioned as a possible fit for the No.2 role, while the club continues to be linked with other names across Europe.
