Manchester United’s return to the Champions League means Michael Carrick will be preparing his squad for one of the most demanding seasons in recent memory.
After guiding the Reds to a third-place Premier League finish, Carrick is expected to use pre-season to integrate new signings, build fitness levels and fine-tune his tactical approach before competitive action begins.
The club’s summer preparations have been gradually taking shape over recent months, with supporters eagerly awaiting confirmation of the final fixture on the schedule.
That confirmation has now arrived.
Manchester United have officially locked in six pre-season matches ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with AC Milan becoming the latest opponent added to an increasingly impressive summer itinerary, as the club announced on their website.
The clash against the Italian giants will take place in Wroclaw, Poland, on 15 August and will serve as United’s final outing before the new season gets underway.
It is a fixture steeped in European history.
United and Milan have faced each other 10 times in the European Cup and Champions League, with the rivalry stretching back to their first encounter in 1958.
Many memorable nights have followed since, making it one of the most recognisable continental matchups of the modern era.
The Rossoneri will arrive boasting a squad packed with established stars, including Mike Maignan, Luka Modric, Rafael Leao and Adrien Rabiot.
Despite finishing fifth in Serie A last season, Milan remain one of Europe’s most respected clubs and will provide a stern examination for Carrick’s side.
The Polish venue also carries significance for United supporters.
The Reds previously travelled to Poland in 1998 to face LKS Lodz in a Champions League qualifier.
That European journey ultimately culminated in the club securing the famous Treble in Barcelona the following year.
United’s preparations will begin much further north.
The first match of the summer sees the Reds travel to Finland for a meeting with Wrexham before another Scandinavian test against Rosenborg in Norway.
Attention then shifts to Sweden, where Atletico Madrid will provide the opposition in Stockholm with the Snapdragon Cup on the line.
The club’s Tour 2026, presented by Snapdragon, starts shortly afterwards with a glamour clash against reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
A meeting with Leeds United in Ireland follows before the final encounter against Milan rounds off the programme.
United’s confirmed pre-season schedule now reads:
Wrexham (Finland)
Rosenborg (Norway)
Atletico Madrid (Stockholm, Sweden)
Paris Saint-Germain
Leeds United (Ireland)
AC Milan (Wroclaw, Poland)
With six fixtures now officially confirmed, Carrick has a strong mix of opponents to test his squad before Manchester United embark on another campaign that will include both domestic competition and a long-awaited return to Champions League football.
