Manchester United return to Premier League action this week facing a tricky fixture away at Burnley, with the club desperate to climb the table after their draw against Leeds United to start their 2026.

Supporters have been vocal in their criticism of the team’s style at times, questioning tactics and squad utilisation.

Off the pitch, speculation has grown around United’s recruitment strategy and how new signings like Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha are being integrated.

The January transfer window also adds pressure for a quick response to the club’s recent struggles.

After 14 months in charge, Manchester United have decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed via their website on Monday.

“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” the official statement read.

The Portuguese coach was appointed in November 2024 and led the side to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao last May, narrowly missing out on European glory.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish,” the statement continued.

Amorim’s tenure had been defined by tactical rigidity, struggles in the domestic league, and public disagreements over squad building and formation choices.

Despite a brief spell of promise, the team’s inconsistent results and the lack of investment in his preferred system reportedly contributed to the board’s decision.

The club thanked Amorim for his contributions: “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

In the interim, former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take the reins.

“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday,” the statement confirmed, with a permanent managerial appointment expected to be reviewed later in the season.

The decision marks a significant turning point for the Red Devils as they seek to stabilise their campaign and rebuild momentum for a strong Premier League finish.
