Manchester United have undergone a major comeback in the second half of the Premier League season under the guardianship of Michael Carrick.
Since Carrick’s first game against rivals Manchester City, which the Red Devils won 2-0, United have not looked back climbing up the table to their current third placed position.
Bumps in the road have existed, however, with losses to Newcastle United and Leeds United standing out whilst a draw away at West Ham United also frustrated supporters.
Even with these bumps, though, the club have been able to secure Champions League qualification for next season with victory against Liverpool.
The win means that Bournemouth in sixth place can no longer catch the Red Devils, guaranteeing a place inside the top five which is enough to qualify for next season’s prestigious club competition.
United did not play in Europe this season after missing out on the Europa League title to Tottenham Hotspur in the final. The club have also not played in the Champions League since the 2023-24 season where they were knocked out in the group stages.
Since then, the tournament has undergone significant changes with a league format introduced, replacing the old groups.
Every team is now put into a league and play eight matches against different teams in the group, with the top eight in the group at the end of those games going through automatically.
The 16 teams below them go into a play-off against each other to fight for their place in the round of 16 whilst the bottom 12 teams are knocked out of the competition and do not return.
It remains to be seen who will lead Manchester United into the Champions League next season and the club have not made any official announcement about their next choice.
Michael Carrick has been heavily linked with the role with reports even stating that he would secure the permanent job should Manchester United qualify for the Champions League, which the team have now done.
Andoni Iraola has also been linked to the role although is also of interest to Chelsea who are looking to replace Liam Rosenior.
Either way, Manchester United fans and the team at the club may take pride in their achievement in qualifying for next season’s Champions League, an opportunity with big benefits.
