Manchester United have continued their preparations for the 2026/27 campaign, with defensive reinforcements remaining on the club’s agenda despite midfield additions being viewed as the priority.

While United have focused much of their attention on strengthening in midfield, the club have also explored defensive options this summer, with talks having taken place over a possible move for Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall.

However, the latest piece of business completed at Old Trafford has come much closer to home.

United have confirmed another important long-term commitment as the club continue to plan for the future.

United continue long-term planning

Manchester United announced on their official website that Scarlett Hill has signed her first professional contract with the club.

The defender has agreed a deal until June 2028, with the option of a further year.

Hill has been with United since the age of nine and is regarded as one of the brightest prospects to emerge from the club’s academy system.

The versatile defender, who is already a senior Wales international despite being just 18 years old, spent the second half of the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Sheffield United.

She had previously featured in numerous first-team squads under Marc Skinner before heading out to gain senior experience.

Hill will now wear the number 22 shirt as she looks to establish herself in the first-team setup.

Speaking after signing the contract, Hill admitted that it was an “unbelievable feeling” to commit her future to the club she has supported and represented for almost a decade.

United have already tied down several important players to fresh terms in recent months, with both Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire signing new contracts before the end of last season.

Hill’s agreement is another indication of the club’s determination to reward talent developed within its academy.

Supporting and developing young players has long been part of Manchester United’s identity.

Scarlett Hill will now hope to follow in the footsteps of several academy graduates who have established themselves in the senior side.
