Manchester United are in talks for Jonathan Tah

Manchester United fans should brace themselves for significant changes this summer, with a major shake-up expected across multiple areas of the squad. One of the key departments likely to see reinforcements is the defence, where injuries and uncertain futures have left the Red Devils short on reliable options. Both Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez have endured injury-plagued campaigns, while Victor Lindelöf and Jonny Evans are expected to depart the club upon the expiry of their contracts.

To address this looming void, United have reportedly entered the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah on a free transfer. Adrian Sanchez via X has revealed that Manchester United are in active talks with Tah’s agent, Pini Zahavi, to try and finalise a deal. However, the Red Devils face stiff competition from Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, both of whom are also keeping close tabs on the German international.

Tah has been one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga this season, playing a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable run to the league title. His performances have caught the eye across Europe, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the 28-year-old is expected to seek a new challenge. Statistically, Tah has featured in 30 Bundesliga matches during the 2024/25 season, helping his side concede just 32 goals, averaging one goal conceded every 84 minutes with him on the pitch. Defensively, he’s recorded 0.36 tackles, 1.07 interceptions, and an impressive 4.50 clearances per 90 minutes, showcasing his positional intelligence and command at the back. In addition, he’s contributed two goals, underlining his aerial threat from set-pieces.

Securing Tah on a free transfer could prove a shrewd piece of business for Manchester United, bringing in a defender with experience, physicality, and winning pedigree, all without a transfer fee. In a summer where smart signings will be key to United’s rebuild, this could be a move that ticks every box.

Manchester United’s interest in Jonathan Tah goes beyond typical transfer speculation, it signals a deliberate and strategic attempt to reinforce a defence that has lacked consistency, leadership, and resilience this season. With ongoing talks already underway between United and the defender’s agent, Pini Zahavi, the club appears keen to move swiftly for the 29-year-old Bayer Leverkusen stalwart. Tah’s blend of composure, physicality, and big-game experience makes him an ideal candidate to help stabilise the backline and bring much-needed authority to the heart of United’s defence.

Jonathan Tah brings exactly what Ruben Amorim’s system requires: experience, a commanding physical presence, and the tactical discipline to operate effectively in a three-man defensive setup. Even more appealing is the fact that he’s set to become a free agent this summer, a significant advantage for a Manchester United side facing financial constraints and seeking value-driven reinforcements. However, United aren’t alone in their pursuit.

European giants Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are also circling, intensifying the competition. Securing a player of Tah’s calibre would not only fortify United’s backline but also signal a clear intent about the club’s ambition and strategic direction under Amorim. If the Red Devils are truly serious, they must act decisively—and make a compelling pitch that Old Trafford is where Tah belongs next.
