Manchester United are aiming to beat Tottenham to the free transfer signing of LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes

Manchester United are expected to be in the market for midfield reinforcements in the summer, with Christian Eriksen set to leave on a free transfer. Despite Casemiro’s renaissance in the last two months, the club remain open to offers for him.

A significant overhaul in the midfield looks inevitable, as the Red Devils prepare for a crucial summer rebuild under head coach Ruben Amorim. A replacement for Eriksen is a must heading into the 2025/26 season, and it looks like INEOS have started taking appropriate steps.

According to an exclusive report from Caught Offside, Manchester United are contemplating hijacking Tottenham’s move for LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes. Spurs are leading the race for him at the moment, with Ange Postecoglou’s side pushing to wrap up a deal on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Ange Gomes has been a consistent performer for Lille in recent years, racking up 10 goals and 19 assists in 134 appearances across all competitions. The 24-year-old is coming to the end of his contract, and after four seasons with Lille, he is pursuing a new challenge. The Edmonton-born talent’s campaign has been impeded by injuries, while his refusal to sign a new contract has prompted Lille to omit him from their recent games.

Given his contract situation, several clubs are vying for the central midfielder’s signature. The aforementioned report adds that Gomes’ return to Old Trafford cannot be ruled out, even though Spurs are the frontrunners for his services at this moment.

The four-cap England international joined Man Utd’s academy at a tender age of six, honing his skills at Carrington before leaving the club as a free agent in the summer of 2020. He looks like a great opportunity on the market, one that the Red Devils must look to bring back to the club.

Technically gifted, tactically smart and versatile, Gomes would be a fantastic potential replacement for Eriksen. He’d lift the technical flooring of Ruben Amorim’s starting XI, complementing the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount in the middle of the park. The 24-year-old has the qualities to be a fine signing to strengthen this United side, who have had a difficult Premier League season and surely need to make changes before heading into the 2025/26 campaign.

While Spurs are leading the race for Gomes, United beating Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21 and subsequently qualifying for the Champions League may change the scenario.
