This is a Manchester United predicted lineup for their Premier League clash with Chelsea. The visitors haven’t won a league match at Old Trafford since 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson was still manager at the time, making this one of the Blues’ worst omens in modern football. Despite how poor Ruben Amorim’s reign has been, even he should be able to bank on a result here….right?
Altay Bayindir has come in as the first choice goalkeeper in the absence of Andre Onana but poor performances have seen calls for new signing Senne Lammens to come in. Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro are stalwarts in the back line with Luke Shaw coming in on the left, leaving no room for veteran Harry Maguire.
Patrick Dorgu is most often used as the left wing-back with Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo trading the right back position. Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes is the preferred option in central midfield with Manuel Ugarte the primary third option.
Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount, and Bryan Mbuemo looked to be the preferred attacking trio as all three have energy and pressing ability, but injuries saw Benjamin Sesko and Amad come in for Mount and Cunha last time out.
Amorim has used his 3-4-2-1/3-4-3 formation that provided him with success at Sporting. His system requires a lot of energy, particularly in midfield, which makes one question the personnel used in his central midfield pairing. His energetic front line can press high and his wing-backs provide dangerous width. On paper, this is a very dangerous setup but the players aren’t executing it at the necessary level.
Manchester United have just four points from four matches in the league with a tight win over Burnley offsetting the losses to Arsenal and Manchester City. Scoring goals isn’t an issue against certain opposition but high-quality defences can keep this side quiet. A 2-2 draw and eventual loss to Grimsby looms large and makes the atmosphere around the club seem much more toxic. Another loss here would see them lose four of their first six matches in all competitions and would ramp up pressure on the players and manager
According to an official update from the Red Devils they will have Mount and Cunha available after missing the Manchester derby last weekend. A start would see the Englishman reunite with his boyhood club. Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez are both still injured.
With the only two players who caused changes last weekend now available, we could see the same eleven as the Burnley match. The big question remains in goal as Bayindir’s poor form isn’t making him any case to be first-choice goalkeeper but this level of opposition might not be the best situation to throw a brand new goalkeeper into.
