The 2024/25 Premier League season was one of the worst campaigns in Manchester United’s history. Finishing 15th in the league table, losing to Spurs in the Europa League final, and being knocked out of European football for the 2025/26 season turned out to be painful realities for us. The club made a last-ditch effort by bringing in Ruben Amorim mid-season, when things weren’t working under Erik Ten Hag, but the results did not come close to the expectations of United fans. Despite this, the old habit of not giving up is alive once again at Old Trafford, and this hope is reflected in the preparations for next season.
The Red Devils made their intentions clear as soon as the current summer transfer window opened. Two big names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were quickly added to the squad, while the newly signed Diogo Leon is being considered a promising investment for the future. Despite this, the team are still looking for strength in many other departments. Strengthening the team is obviously the priority for the management. So, the club’s activities are constantly in the headlines, and links to some new players are emerging every day.
Coming to the main news, according to a report in the Spanish newspaper Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United have shown interest in Barcelona’s attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez. The club are said to be willing to spend around €70m and the Catalan club could consider the offer, as per the report. Although the deal is still in its early stages, things could pick up pace in the coming weeks. Both Barcelona and the 22-year-old are fully aware of the interest, and discussions have already begun in the corridors of Camp Nou. We had also earlier stated in one of our reports on our blog that Barcelona rejected an offer from our club for Lopez.
Now, if we talk about the Spaniard’s traits, Lopez is known to be a fast, creative and box-to-box player. His goal-scoring ability, combined with his runs in the final third, makes him one of the most promising midfield talents of the present time. Lopez has been a key part of Hansi Flick’s plans in the attacking midfield, and his performances in big matches have repeatedly proved that.
It is exciting to see our club getting linked to Lopez, as he shows a lot of maturity for his age. His technical qualities, attacking instincts and role in Flick’s team suggest that he and Dani Olmo could sooner or later become consistent big-match-winners by interchanging roles. So, we feel that Barcelona would therefore be reluctant to sell Lopez despite the revenue concerns, as such versatile young midfielders do not come along very often.
On the other hand, United’s squad structure raises questions. Cunha and Mbeumo can already adjust to two attacking midfield roles. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount are already in the squad. In hindsight, the lack of edge in the striker position was evident last season, so the decision to add more depth to the attacking midfield after Cunha and Mbeumo’s signing is puzzling. There are reports of Garnacho‘s sale, but that too has not been finalised. Therefore, such a huge expenditure does not seem logical, especially when there is no European revenue. Hopefully, the club will take the next step thoughtfully and invest in the right place.
