Manchester United have spent considerable time reshaping their midfield.
Michael Carrick’s side invested heavily in the middle of the pitch during the summer, bringing in Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba to strengthen their options.
Kobbie Mainoo remains an important part of the club’s plans, although his recent injury absence, which he is now back from, has highlighted the need for reliable depth.
Bruno Fernandes continues to offer creativity further forward.
With competition for places increasing, United must also consider how their next generation can eventually make the step into senior football.
Finding young players before their value rises further could prove just as important as competing for established stars.
United have now reportedly sent scouts to Sweden to watch IFK Goteborg teenager Oliver Mansson, who is attracting interest from several clubs across Europe, as reported by Expressen.
The 17-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season in Swedish football after progressing through Goteborg’s youth system and earning promotion to the senior side earlier this year.
He has established himself as a regular in the starting XI, operating primarily as a central midfielder but also capable of playing in a deeper defensive role.
Reports from Sweden indicate that Manchester United were among five clubs represented at Goteborg’s 1-1 draw against Djurgardens IF on Wednesday.
Leicester City, Watford, AS Roma and SC Freiburg also had scouts in attendance, underlining the level of interest in the young midfielder.
Goteborg football chief Jesper Jansson has suggested the youngster could command a significant transfer fee.
However, he confirmed that Goteborg had not received any concrete approaches.
The teenager has also progressed at international level with Sweden’s youth teams and has previously admitted that playing for Barcelona would be a dream.
Despite that ambition, the immediate interest in his services is coming from a wider group of European clubs.
There is one important obstacle for United as Oliver Mansson cannot move to the United Kingdom until he turns 18 in August 2027.
An agreement could potentially be reached before then, allowing the clubs to arrange a future arrival, although no deal has been confirmed.
