Manchester United are back in the hunt for Botafogo goalkeeper John

The pressure never stops in England. In Manchester, a sense of change is palpable that goes far beyond a bad result or a disastrous season. Red Devils fans are clamouring for bold decisions and signings that add character to a squad that is too fragile under times of stress. That is why every move out of Old Trafford generates immediate interest. Now there is talk of goalkeeping, an area that seemed closed after the arrival of André Onana. However, the doubts surrounding the Cameroonian have multiplied and the board have started to look outside the Premier League. According to Brazilian journalist André Hernan, via Sport Witness, Manchester United reactivated their interest in Botafogo goalkeeper John after his remarkable performance at the Club World Cup. An English scout was already present at Botafogo’s surprise win over PSG, but it was his performance against Palmeiras that reinforced the idea of signing him.

Although Botafogo were eliminated, John, 29 years old, was a standout performer. Now, reports from GOAL Brazil, via Sport Witness, confirm that there is a release clause of just $8 million. That figure suggests that Old Trafford could make a move soon, especially if Onana ends up leaving this summer, as is being rumoured from various quarters.

Opinion:

In our opinion, Manchester United should evaluate this operation with a cool head. It is tempting to think that a goalkeeper who shines in an international showcase can maintain that level every week in the Premier League, but it doesn’t always happen. John was confident and brave, two traits that are in short supply in the Red Devils’ squad today. However, it would be a mistake to sign him just because he is in his prime. Consider that he is 29 years old and has little real experience in Europe’s top leagues.

The price seems a bargain compared to other top-level goalkeepers, but that very detail reflects the doubt that his projection generates. For 8 million, the risk is not high, but in Manchester, they have already burned themselves too many times signing gambles that don’t fit.

Regarding Onana, we think a clear solution is urgently needed. His performance has been too irregular, and there is no absolute confidence in him. If his departure is indeed confirmed, John could be a temporary alternative, but he is not a name that fits as an undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for five or six years. United need stability and a leader in goal. John can compete and add internal competition, yes. Can he get there? Of course, he can.

If they really want him, the clause makes it easy. Botafogo will not stand in the way, and the player will surely look favourably on a move to Europe after turning down previous offers. The real question is whether Old Trafford are willing to sign another goalkeeper with question marks. For a club that need to rebuild its identity, getting every reinforcement right is vital. If United take the plunge, they should back John and give him time. But if they are hoping for an immediate saviour, perhaps they should look at profiles with more track records in top games.
